What is the GSE class schedule?

How does a student receive mail or other items?Students’ mail/packages are picked up Monday-Friday at the Meredith College post office by a GSE staff member and distributed to the students at curfew. The Meredith College post office is closed from midday on Friday through Sunday - deliveries will not be made to campus on the weekends. Please refrain from sending heavy items, such as large numbers of drinks.

In addition to mailing packages, parents may drop off items (including non-perishable food) for students at the GSE office during regular office hours Monday-Friday 8:30 AM-5 PM, Saturday 8:30 AM-12 PM, and to the students directly during visiting hours on Sunday 9 AM-3 PM. Items dropped off at the GSE office should be boxed/bagged and clearly labeled with the student’s full name, residence hall, and room number. Items will be delivered to the student at curfew. If the item is needed by the student immediately, parents should speak to the office staff directly to make arrangements. Food requiring refrigeration should not be delivered to the GSE office.
Students are prohibited from ordering from Instacart, DoorDash, FreshDirect or similar delivery companies - the Meredith College post office and the GSE office will not accept these deliveries. Students are also prohibited from ordering take-out food deliveries from area restaurants.

Medical and family emergencies will be considered on an as needed basis. Please submit leave requests to Governor's School Coordinator Rodney Allen at Rodney.Allen@dpi.nc.gov. Please include your child's first and last name, your first and last name, your best contact number and email, the date and time of the requested departure and return, and a brief but detailed description of the request. If approved, you will be contacted and notified by the office and your student will need to be signed out in the GSE Office, Vann 117. If sign out/in is necessary outside of regular business hours, please do so through the student's residence hall TAC or the administrator on duty.

How will I know what to specifically bring for my Area I classes, including dress for presentations and performances?

When will I receive my room assignment?
Rooming assignments will be emailed to all students in early June. If you have not received your rooming information email by June 14th, look in your junk or spam folder. If it is not there, contact the GSE Office at ncgse.office@gmail.com.

Do I need to bring my own sports equipment?
GSE has lots of recreational equipment but you are also welcome to bring your own. Hand weights are also allowed in the residence hall rooms.

How can I celebrate my birthday while at GSE?
With all of your new friends! We will enjoy celebrating your special day with you. You may not have family/friends visit on your birthday but are encouraged to connect with them on FaceTime. Plan for a belated celebration once you return home.

Are the Meredith College gym and tennis courts available for GSE students to use?
The Activities Coordinator will organize lots of fun activities in the gym including basketball, table tennis, and volleyball games and matches! The tennis courts will be periodically reserved for GSE use but don't count on that as a daily offering. GSE students and staff do not have access to a fitness center - bring hand weights or resistance bands to use instead.

Will there be dances at GSE?
Yes! We have a great sound system and enjoy having dances on the Quad every summer. We will not have a formal or semi-formal dance - casual attire.

Can I use cash or credit/debit cards in the Campus Store? Is there an ATM?
Yes - you can use either cash or card. The Campus Store will be open Monday-Friday 9:30 AM-3:30 PM. You will find school supplies, basic toiletries, and Meredith College swag. There is an ATM in the Cate Student Center.

Can I have a microwave, hotplate, tea kettle, coffee maker, toaster oven and/or refrigerator in my room?
You may bring a small refrigerator - but you need to bring your own - Meredith College does not rent refrigerators. All other kitchen appliances are prohibited. Check the GSE Student Handbook for a list of recommended and prohibited items. There is a shared microwave available for student use on each floor of the residence halls.

Are residence hall rooms air-conditioned? Do I need a fan?
Yes, all residence hall rooms are air-conditioned but you may still find it helpful to bring a fan, depending on your hot/cold comfort level. You will not have a thermostat in your room that you can control unless you live on the 4th floor.

How many students share a bathroom in the residence halls?
Rooming is suite-style at GSE. Two residence hall rooms share an adjoining bathroom. There are two students assigned to each room so four students share one bathroom.

Yes, you are encouraged to bring guitars, ukuleles, harmonicas, etc. for impromptu music-making on the quad or for Open Mic Nights.

Who will clean my room and bathroom? What about toilet paper?
Students are responsible for providing cleaning supplies and are responsible for the cleaning of their own rooms and the shared suite bathroom. Beds should be made daily. Floor areas should be kept clear. Food items should be in sealed containers. Toilet paper is provided by Meredith College but bring your own paper towels.

Can I do laundry at GSE?
Yes! Bring your own laundry supplies but the washers and dryers are free. Laundry pods are convenient for the washers. Students will be assigned laundry rooms that they can access in the residence halls. Fellows (hall counselors) will help to establish a sign-up for doing laundry.

Who can attend Area I Cornerstones (performances and presentations)?
Only families and invited guests can attend Area I Cornerstones. These events will be detailed on the GSE calendar found on the GSE website.

How does Sunday Check Out work?
Please arrive between the hours of 9-3 to check out students, there is no 4-hour window that was a rule in the past. 9 am is our busiest time for check out so please be aware of that. Upon check out you must show proof of ID and have your student present with you to complete check out. Once you have been checked as an approved guardian you may take your student for the allotted time.
Please remember that check in time is 3 pm. That is the time they need to be signed in and not just back on campus. Returning late and failure to check in results in repercussions for your student. When returning to campus remember that guest and parents are prohibited from entering any of the residence halls as well as the dining hall. If your student needs assistance bringing anything up, please ask a staff member.
